전치사 in은 중세영어 시절에 두개의 고대 영어 in과 inne이 통합되어 탄생되었습니다. 고대영어 in은 "in, into, on, on, at, between; about, during"의 뜻을 갖고 있었고 inne는 부사로 "within, inside,"의 뜻을 갖고 있었습니다. 어원은 Proto-Germanic *in, PIE 어원은 *en "in"입니다.
