1. 계속적 용법의 관계대명사절
본문은 짧은 주절에 굉장히 긴 관계대명사절이 연결된 구조입니다.
[22/72] Stories help us make sense of the world, which is why we've been telling them to each other for millennia - and why some of the earliest folk tales - stories that parents have told and passed on to their children over many years - are still being told today.
먼저 주절입니다.
⑴Stories help us make sense of the world,
「make sense of」는 숙어 동사로 '(이해하기 어려운) ~을 이해하다'의 뜻입니다.
「help + 목적어 + 부정사」 구문으로 5형식의 구조를 갖습니다. help가 사역동사라 원형부정사인 make를 취하고 있습니다. 이를 직역하면 다음과 같습니다.
⑴이야기들은 우리가 세상을 이해할 수 있도록 도와줍니다.
다음은 관계대명사절입니다.
⑵which is ①(why we've been telling them to each other for millennia) –and ②(why some of the earliest folk tales - stories [that parents have told and passed on to their children over many years] - are still being told today.)
계속적 용법의 관계사절입니다.
which가 단수를 지시하는 것으로 보아 선행사는 앞 문장 전체를 받는 것으로 생각할 수 있습니다.
관계사절이 다소 복잡해 보입니다. 관계사절은 두 개의 why절로 구성되어 있습니다.
첫 번째 why절은 다음과 같습니다.
①Why we've been telling them to each other for millennia
①[우리가 천년 동안 그것들을 서로에게 말해 오고 있는 중인] 이유
②번째 why절이 다소 복잡해 보입니다.
②(why some of the earliest folk tales - stories [that parents have told and passed on to their children over many years] - are still being told today.)
이 절의 주어는 ‘some of the earliest folk tales – stories’가 주어입니다. ‘some of the earliest folk tales’와 ‘stories’는 동격입니다. 주어는 that 관계대명사절의 수식을 받고 있습니다.
are가 동사입니다.
핵심 문장을 추려 보면 다음과 같습니다.

간단한 수동태 진행형 문장입니다.
다음은 이를 직역한 것입니다.

2. The reason why ~ is because ~ 구문
아래는 The reason why ~ is because ~ 구문으로 because절이 명사절로 쓰이는 특이한 구조의 문장입니다.
[38/72] Often the reason why we feel so motivated to pass on stories is because the stories do tap into certain universal human fantasies and fears that will often transcend the concerns of particular times and places.
문장이 살짝 복잡해 보이지만 형용사절로 쓰이는 두 개의 절을 제외한 핵심 문장만 보면 그리 어렵지 않습니다. 즉, 다음과 같습니다.
The reason is because the stories do tap into certain universal human fantasies and fears.
그 이유는 이야기들이 어떤 보편적인 인간의 환상과 두려움을 이용하기 때문입니다.
★ tap into ‘…을 활용[이용]하다’
why절은 the reason을 선행사로 하는 표준적인 관계부사절입니다.
why we feel so motivated to pass on stories
[우리가 그들 이야기를 전달하는 것에 그렇게 동기 부여를 느끼는]
that절은 관계대명사절로 선행사는 ‘certain universal human fantasies and fears’입니다.
that will often transcend the concerns of particular times and places
[특정한 시간과 장소의 관심사를 종종 초월할 수도 있는]
이를 전체로 묶어 직역하면 다음과 같습니다.
