두개의 등위절이 and로 연결되어 있습니다. 뒤의 절이 「the 비교급+S+V, the 비교급+S+V」 구문입니다. 이 구문의 두번째 절이 whether 명사절을 목적어로 갖고 있고, 내부에 where 관계부사절을 포함하고 있습니다.

먼저 앞 문장을 봅니다.

sadness 뒤에 목적격 관계대명사 which 또는 that이 생략되어 있습니다. 다음과 같이 직역됩니다.
[헬렌이 느끼는] 슬픔은 사라지지 않았습니다.
⑵번 문장은 the+비교급 the+비교급 구문입니다.
and ⑵the longer she lived abroad, the more she wondered whether her feelings were somehow connected to being born in England, into a culture where, traditionally, expressing your emotions was discouraged.
이 구문은 ‘~하면 할수록 더욱 ~ 하다’의 뜻입니다. 기본적으로 다음과 같이 직역됩니다.
그녀가 해외에 오래 살면 살수록 그녀는 ~하는 지 아닌 지가 더욱 더 궁금해졌습니다.
앞의 the+비교급 절은 다음과 같이 직역할 수 있습니다.
the longer she lived abroad,
그녀가 해외에 더 오래 살면 살수록
뒤의 the+비교급 절에 whether 명사절은 목적어입니다.
the more she wondered whether ~
그는 더 많이 [~인지 아닌지]가 궁금했습니다
이제 whether절을 따로 살펴보겠습니다.
whether her feelings were somehow connected to being born in England, into a culture.
그녀의 감정이 (어떤) 문화 속에 있는 영국에서 태어난 것에 어느 정도 연관되어 있는지 (아닌) 지
where 관계사절의 culture를 한정 수식하고 있습니다. where는 ‘a culture’를 선행사로 하는 관계부사입니다. where 관계부사절의 주어는 ‘expressing your emotions’ 동명사 구입니다. whether 절은 이제 다음과 같이 직역됩니다.
where, traditionally, expressing your emotions was discouraged.
전통적으로 당신의 감정을 표현하는 것이 좌절되었다
⑵번 문장 전체는 다음과 같이 직역됩니다.
그녀가 해외에 더 오래 살면 살수록, 그는 더 많이 [그녀의 감정이 [전통적으로 당신의 감정을 표현하는 것이 좌절되었던] 문화 속에 있는 영국에서 태어난 것에 어느 정도 연관되어 있는지 (아닌) 지]가 궁금했습니다
3. 길지만 어렵지 않은 인터뷰 문장
다음 문장은 인터뷰 문입니다. 매우 길지만, 각각의 절은 그리 어려워 보이지 않습니다.
[37/55] As you can imagine, it fits with the era of empire, of white British men going around the world conquering it, and having a stiff upper lip and ruling over the people… in other parts of the world, and believing themselves, the white Europeans, to be superior… and one sign of that superiority, and Darwin writes: Englishmen rarely caught cry except under the pressure of the acutest grief.
그리 어렵지 않으므로 각 절을 하나씩 살펴보겠습니다.
