And로 연결된 복잡한 두 문장

다음 문장은 and로 두 개의 문장이 연결되어 있습니다. 그런데 각각의 문장이 까다롭습니디.

 

[35/70] ⑴Even the name, Mami Wata, which is pidgin English for 'Mother Water', so it's loosely translated from pidgin English as 'the mother of water' and ⑵the characteristics that are commonly shared when speaking about Mami Wata across the West African coast is that this deity is the protector of the water kingdom.

 

첫 번째 문장입니다.

 

⑴ Even the name, Mami Wata, which is pidgin English for 'Mother Water', so it's loosely translated from pidgin English as 'the mother of water'

 

문장 중간에 삽입된 절은 관계대명사 절입니다. 이 절은 콤마로 둘러싸여 있습니다. 이런 유형의 관계대명사를 비제한적 용법의 관계대명사라고 합니다.

 

비제한적 용법의 관계대명사는 마치 삽입절처럼 부연 설명을 해 주는데, 부연설명의 대상이 선행사가 됩니다.

이 문장을 관계대명사절로 결합하기 전의 문장으로 복원하면 대략 다음과 같습니다.

두 번째 문장을 보겠습니다.

「that are commonly shared」 절은 제한적 용법의 that 관계대명사절로 선행사는 ‘The characteristics’입니다.

「when speaking about Mami Wata across the West African coast」는 분사 구문입니다.

 

이  어구를 제외한 것이 이 핵심 문장입니다. 즉, 이 문장은 ‘The characteristics’이 주어 is가 동사 그리고 is 이후의 that 명사절이 보어인 2형식 문장입니다.

 

다음은 이를 직역한 것입니다.
