이번 주 살펴 본 문장 중에는 다음의 내용들이 포함되어 있습니다.
1. Because 명사절, The reason {why} because 구문
다음의 두 문장은 Because절이 명사절로 사용한 드문 경우입니다.
[22] So, if you image what the rainbow looks like, the reason a plant looks green is because it's not using all the green light - it actually reflects a lot of that back.
이 문장은 기본적으로 if 종속절을 갖는 복문 구조의 문장입니다. 그런데 주절의 because절이 조금 생경합니다. 왜냐하면 because절이 보어 역할을 하고 있기 때문입니다. 우선 각 문장을 보겠습니다.

what절이 목적절인 3형식 문장입니다. 그런데 what절이 관계대명사절인지 의문사절(명사절)인지 구분하기가 어렵습니다. 그런데 굳이 구별 구별할 필요 없습니다.
그래서, 만약 당신이 [무지개가 무엇과 같이 보이는 지]를 상상한다면,
주절을 보겠습니다. the reason 뒤에 관계부사 why가 생략되어 있습니다.
the reason {why} a plant looks green is because it's not using all the green light - it actually reflects a lot of that back.
이 문장은 주어가 the reason is가 동사, because절이 보어인 2형식 구조입니다. 부사절을 이끄는 because가 사용되고 있기 때문에 문법에 어긋난다고 주장하는 사람도 많지만 원어민들은 실제로 어색함 없이 이 문장을 사용한다고 합니다.
식물이 녹색으로 보이는 이유는 그것이 녹색 빛을 모두 사용하지는 않기 때문입니다, 그것은 실제로 그것 중 많은 부분을 뒤로 반사합니다.
다음 문장에서 the reason why ~ is because 구문이 사용되었습니다. 이번에는 why를 생략하지 않았습니다.

두 번째 문장을 보겠습니다.

이 문장은 주절과 so that 부사절로 구성된 복문입니다. so that절은 다시 주절과 when절과 because 절 등 두 개의 부사절을 갖는 복문 구조입니다.
본문의 so that 구문은 ‘~하여 (결과적) ~ 하다’라는 의미로 쓰였다고 볼 수도 있고 ‘~하기 위하여’라는 의미로 쓰였다고 볼 수도 있습니다.
주절을 먼저 보겠습니다.

tailor는 ‘ (특정한 목적·사람 등에) 맞추다[조정하다]’의 의미를 갖는 동사로 5형식 동사(불완전타동사)입니다. ‘the light’가 목적어 diet는 형용사로 쓰여 ‘낮은 칼로리의’라는 의미를 갖습니다. 다음과 같이 직역할 수 있습니다.
근본적으로 그것이 빛을 적은 량으로 조정합니다.
이제 so that절 내부를 보겠습니다.
The plants look black / when you look at them / because they're not reflecting any light.
[당신이 그것들을 살펴 볼 때 [그것들이 어떤 빛도 반영시키지 않기 때문에] 식물이 검게 보인다.
문장 전체를 직역하면 다음과 같습니다.

2. 여러 개의 대시가 접속사 and처럼 사용된 문장
다음은 여러 개의 대시가 접속사 and처럼 사용된 문장입니다.
[32] They can adapt to so many different environments - we call this plasticity because they can turn on or off their genes to really adapt to all sorts of conditions and that's why you see plants growing in different areas on Earth - the same type of plant may look very different because it's adapting to the environment in that specific location.
대시가 and와 같이 문장을 연결하는 기능을 하기 때문에 본문은 다음과 같이 세 개의 문장으로 나누어 볼 수 있습니다.

to adapt 부정사는 부사적으로 사용되고 있습니다. ‘적응하기 위해서’라는 뜻의 ‘목적’으로 해석할 수도 있고 ‘키고 꺼서 (결과적으로) 적응하다’라고 ‘결과’로 해석할 수도 있습니다.
(목적) 우리는 이것을 가소성이라고 부르는데, 왜냐하면 그들이 온갖 종류의 조건에 실제로 적응하기 위하여 그들의 유전자를 켜거나 끌 수 있기 때문입니다.

why는 관계부사입니다. 선행사 ‘the reason’이 생략되어 있다고 보면 됩니다. why절 내부는 지각동사인 see가 포함된 5형식 구조의 문장입니다. plants가 목적어, ‘growing ~’ 동명사구가 목적격 보어입니다.
그것이 [당신이 식물이 지구의 여러 다른 지역에서 자라는 것을 보는 이유] 입니다.
문장의 마지막 부분을 보겠습니다.
The same type of plant may look very different because it's adapting to the environment in that specific location.
because 부사절을 포함하는 복문구조의 문장입니다.
같은 형태의 식물은 매우 다르게 보일 수 있는데, 왜냐하면 그런 특정 지역의 환경에 적응하고 있기 때문입니다.
3. 형용사 전위 수식과 콤마
다음 문장은 콤마로 인해 문장 이해에 혼선을 주고 있습니다.
[38] And as a result they're stronger and more resilient to other, less stressful events when they return home to Earth.
처음 이 문장을 보았을 때 전체 문맥을 쉽게 파악이 되었지만, other와 less stressful 사이의 콤마로 인해 문장 분석에 애를 먹었습니다.
저는 콤마를 기준으로 두 개의 문장이 연결된 구조라고 생각했습니다. 콤마가 접속사의 기능도 하기 때문에 가능한 접근이었습니다. 그런데 그렇게 보면 여러 가지 무리가 많습니다. other가 대명사가 되어야 하고 두 번째 문장에 주어 동사도 추정해야 합니다.
두 번째 접근은 ‘other, less stressful events’를 하나의 명사구로 보는 것입니다. 즉, other와 less stressful이 events를 전위 수식하는 것으로 보면 문장은 아주 간단해 집니다. 그런데 문법적으로 전위 수식하는 형용사를 연결할 때는 기본적으로 콤마나 접속사를 사용하지 않습니다. 다만 성격이 같은 두 개의 형용사를 함께 사용할 때만 콤마나 and를 씁니다. 그러나 본문의 other와 less stressful은 성격이 다른 형용사입니다. 추측하건 데 less stressful이 두 단어로 구성된 것이기 때문 것 콤마를 사용한 것 같습니다. 그런데 아직 그 문법적 근거 자료를 찾지는 못했습니다.
최종적으로 저는 후자의 방법을 채택하여 다음과 같이 직역하였습니다.
그리고 결과적으로 그들은 더 강해지고, [그들이 지구로 귀환했을 때] 다른, 덜 스트레스 받는 사건에 더 내성이 강해집니다
