이번 주에는 두 개의 긴 문장을 중심으로 다루어 보겠습니다.
1. 복잡한 명사절
다음 문장은 간단한 2형식 문장입니다. 다만, ‘in the sense’ 부사구의 sense와 관련된 that 절이 좀 어렵습니다.
[30/61] Yes, and it's a very big shock in the sense that we thought we knew how heatwaves react to global warming and within which boundaries they're increasing (of course they're increasing in temperature) but it's a gradual process we thought and then you get this thing and it's not gradual at all - it's a huge jump!
that절 내부가 꽤 복잡하므로 그 내부를 먼저 보겠습니다. 세개의 등위절이 and로 연결되어 있습니다.
⑴We thought {that} we knew how heatwaves react to global warming and within which boundaries they're increasing (of course they're increasing in temperature) but it's a gradual process we thought
⑵and then you get this thing
⑶and it's not gradual at all - it's a huge jump!
먼저 that절의 ⑴번 문장입니다.
이 문장은 we가 주어, thought가 동사입니다. thought 뒤에 명사절을 이끄는 접속사 that이 생략되어 있는데, 이 that절이 thought의 목적어입니다.
that절 내부가 다음과 같이 다시 세개의 문장으로 구성되어 있습니다.
①we knew {that} how heatwaves react to global warming
②and within which boundaries they're increasing (of course they're increasing in temperature)
③but it's a gradual process we thought
⑴-① 문장입니다. 이 문장은 we가 주어, know가 동사, how 명사절이 목적어인 3형식 문장입니다.

①우리는 혹서기가 지구 온난화에 어떻게 반응하는지를 알고 있었습니다.
⑴-② 문장입니다.

이 문장에서 which는 앞의 문장 내용을 받는 관계 형용사입니다.

다음은 인터뷰 문장으로 약간 길지만 단지 and 접속사로 세개의 등위문이 연결된 구조입니다.

⑴번 문장입니다.

이 문장에는 두개의 like가 나오는데 앞의 것은 전치사 뒤의 것은 접속사입니다. 의미는 둘 다 ‘~와 같이‘의 뜻을 갖습니다.
⑴우리가 작년까지 익숙해져 있었던 것과 같이, 모든 것들이 괜찮은 정규적인 경향과 같이 보였습니다.
⑵번 문장입니다
⑵and then you suddenly break all your records by four or five degrees, I mean, this is something that's no supposed to happen
then은 부사로 보입니다. ‘게다가, 그 외에 또한(besides의 뜻입니다.
‘be suppose to + 부정사’는 예정의 의미를 갖습니다.
that은 주격 관계대명사로 선행사는 something입니다.
이 문장을 직역하면 다음과 같습니다.
