생체공학(bionics)은 생체 시스템(biological systems)을 활용하여 공학적 문제를 해결하려는 학문입니다. Bionics는 biology와 electronics의 합성어입니다. 생물학을 뜻하는 biology는 생명(life)을 뜻하는 그리스어 어근 bio-와 학문이란 뜻의 -logy가 합성된 단어입니다.
영어 어근 bio-는 그리스어 bios를 어원으로 하는데 bios의 의미는 “누군가의 삶, 삶의 여정, 일생(一生)(one's life, course or way of living, lifetime)”이란 뜻을 갖고 있습니다. 특히, bios는 “동물 등 다른 유기체의 삶”을 뜻하는 zoe의 반대 개념으로 사용되어, “인간”이란 뜻이 강조되어 있습니다. Zeo는 zoo-라는 어근으로 영어에 정착해 있습니다.
