aster는 16세게 경 별을 의미하는 단어로 영어에 들어 왔습니다. 그런데 현재는 '별'이라는 의미는 사라지고 ‘과꽃’이라는 의미만 남았습니다. 재미있게도 aster의 형용사형인 astral에는 아직도 "별의'라는 뜻이 남아 있습니다. aster에서 별이라는 의미가 사라지던 시기에 astral에 ‘영적 세계의’라는 의미가 추가되었습니다. 아마도 '별 세계'라는 이미지가 '영적 세계’라는 의미로 확대되었나 봅니다.

별표 표식인 *는 영어로 asterisk 이라고 합니다. Asterisk가 별표를 의미한다는 사실만으로도 이 단어가 별과 관련이 있을 것이라는 것은 충분히 짐작할 수 있습니다. 실제로 Asterisk의 어원은 그리스어 asteriskos입니다, asteriskos는 aster의 지소사(指小詞)로 ‘작은 별’이란 뜻입니다.

우주비행사를 뜻하는 astronaut가 영어에 "space-traveler,"란 의미로 등장한 시기는 1929년입니다. 그런데 실제 우주인이 탄생한 때는 미국에서 우주 계획이 진행되던 때인 1961년입니다. 이 단어는 별(star)를 뜻하는 aster와 항해하는 사람(sailor)란 뜻의 그리스어 nautes를 조합하여 만든 단어입니다. 우주인, 우주비행사란 뜻을 가진 이 단어의 직접적인 어원은 프랑스어 astronautique인데 1927년 벨기에 태생의 한 공상과학작가가 만들었다고 합니다.

운석이 지구에 떨어져 생긴 흔적을 운석공(隕石孔)이라고 하는데, 영어로는 Astrobleme라고 합니다. 이것은 ‘운석이나 소행성에 의한 충격으로 지구 표면에 생간 수수께끼 폭발물 구조(crypto-explosion structure on Earth caused by meteorite or asteroid impact,)’라는 뜻으로 1962년 영어에 등장한 단어인데 문자적으로는 ‘상처 입은 별(star-wound)’이란 뜻입니다. 이 단어는 별(star)를 뜻하는 그리스어 astro와 bleme를 결합하여 만든 단어 입니다 그리스어 bleme는 ‘발사된 미사일’, ‘미사일로 인한 부상’이란 뜻을 갖고 있습니다. 이 단어는 미국의 지질학자 Robert S. Dietz에 의해 처음 단어가 만들어졌습니다. .

Astronaut, Astrobleme 등의 단어를 보면 마치 그리스어 어원이 있어 거기서 유래한 것처럼 보이지만 사실은 후대에 만들어진 단어입니다. 이처럼 Astro 어근은 아직도 새로운 단어를 만드는 단어 조각으로 많이 사용되고 있습니다.

Astro의 PIE 어원은 ster-입니다. 별을 의미하는 영어인 star의 PIE 어원 역시 ster-입니다.

PIE 어원 ster-는 세 갈래의 경로를 통해 별이라는 뜻을 가진 세 개의 다른 모양의 영어 단어가 되었습니다. ‘star’는 게르만 계의 경로로 영어에 도착했고, 그리스어로는 오늘의 어근인 aster의 형태로 어휘가 발달했습니다. 라틴어 어원은 stella입니다.
