[영어어원사전] 어근 lect-, leg-로 영어단어 공부하기 (라틴어 어원; legere, lectus, legibilis)

 

legere라는 라틴어가 있습니다. 이 단어는 크게 두 가지의 뜻을 갖고 있는데 하나는 선택하다(to choose, gather, pick up, select)의 뜻이고 다른 하나는 읽다(to read, mean)의 뜻입니다. legere의 과거분사는 lectus입니다. 이 legere와 lectus를 어원으로 두개의 영어 어근이 나왔는데 lect-와 reg-입니다. ‘’

lect- 어근에 ‘함께’라는 뜻을 갖는 com- 접두사가 붙어 만들어진 단어가 collect ‘모으다, 수집하다’입니다. collect에서 collection, collective 등의 단어가 파생되었습니다.

lect- 어근에 밖(out)를 뜻하는 ex-가 결합하여 만들어진 단어가 elect입니다. 결합하는 과정에서 x가 탈락했습니다. elect는 ‘선출하다’의 뜻을 갖습니다. 명사로는 ‘뽑힌 사람, 특권 계급’이란 뜻을 갖기도 합니다. elect에서 election, elector, elector, electoral 등의 단어가 파생했습니다. elect의 철자가 살짝 변형되어 elite(엘리트)란 단어가 파생했습니다.

leg-어근은 주로 legere의 두번째 뜻인 ‘읽다(read), 뜻하다(mean)’의 뜻을 갖는 단어들을 만들었습니다.

leg-에 형용사를 만드는 어미 -ant가 결합하여 legant-란 어근이 만들어졌는데 여기에 ex- 접두사가 붙어 만들어진 단어가 elegant입니다. leg-에 형용사를 만드는 또 다른 어미 -able이 붙여져 만들어진 어근 -legable에 접두사 ex-가 붙여 만들어진 단어가 eligible이란 단어입니다.

elegant는 ‘우아한, 품격 있는’의 뜻을 갖고, eligible은 ‘’자격이 있는, 바람직한’의 듯을 갖습니다. 그런데 사실 elegant, eligible 및 elect, elite는 라틴어 어원이 모두 갖습니다. 모두 라틴어 eligere가 어원입니다. eligere는 legere와 ex가 결합하여 만들어진 단어입니다.

legere에서 ‘읽을 거리’라는 뜻의 라틴어 legenda가 파생했는데 이것이 현대 영어의 legend(전설)의 어원이 되었습니다. 이 legend에 형용사를 만드는 접미사 -ary가 추가되어 legendary(전설적인)이라는 형용사가 만들어졌습니다.
