1570년대에 chemical이란 단어가 영어에 들어 왔습니다. 최초의 뜻은 연금술을 뜻하는 chemic(alchemy)의 형용사형였으나 곧 연금술의 의미는 사라졌습니다. 화학을 뜻하는 chemistry도 최초의 뜻은 연금술(alchemy)이었지만 곧 ‘자연적인 물리 현상(natural physical process)’이란 뜻으로 바뀌면서 오늘날의 화학이라는 의미로 사용하기 시작했습니다.
