이번 주에는 because절이 부사절이 아닌 명사절로 사용된 문장과 긴 인터뷰 문장 하나를 다루어 보겠습니다.
1. Because 명사절
이 문장은 문맥은 어렵지 않지만 약간의 문법 설명이 필요합니다.
[25/58] According to her, the silence around the subject is because menopause is about getting old, something {which/that} no one wants to be reminded of.
이 문장의 주어는 ‘the silence’, because절이 명사절로, 보어인 2형식 문장입니다. 「around the subject」은 전치사명사구로 주어인 ‘the silence’를 후위 수식합니다.
Because절 내부 또한 2형식 문장입니다. Menopause가 주어이고 something이 보어입니다. Something 뒤에는 something을 선행사로 하는 목적격 관계대명사 which 또는 that이 생략되어 있습니다.
something {which/that} no one wants to be reminded of.
아무도 기억해 내고 싶지 않은 무언가
「about getting old」가 약간 특이합니다. 이것은 전치사명사구로 something을 후위 수식하는 형용사구입니다. 원래 위치는 something의 뒤에 위치해야 하는데 연결되는 관계대명사절과 혼선을 피해가 위해 앞으로 도치되었습니다.
2. 인터뷰 문장
다음은 한 문장으로 된 인터뷰 문장입니다. 이 문장의 경우 문법적으로 문장이 연결하는 구조를 살피는 것은 불필요해 보입니다.
저는 문맥을 기준으로 문장을 구분해 의미를 살펴보기로 했습니다. 문장은 문맥을 기준으로 총 8개의 작은 문장으로 구성되어 있습니다.
[27/58] ⑴Historically, particularly when it comes to women, the older you are you're surplus to excess now, ⑵that's it, you've done your dues, ⑶you've had your children, ⑷your use isn't needed anymore in society… ⑸but actually women are not like that at all, ⑹women are far more becoming productive in the career and workspace and they are the caregivers, ⑻sometimes they are actually the financial providers in their home setting as well.
이제 각 문장들을 직역해 보겠습니다.

다음 문장입니다. 이후의 문장도 그리 어렵지 않기 때문에 직역만 했습니다.

당신은 당신의 아이들을 낳았습니다.
⑷your use isn't needed anymore in society…
당신의 용도는 더 이상 사회에서 필요치 않습니다.
