circus는 로마시대 경주용으로 만들어진 계단형의 대형 원형 경기장(circular arenas)을 일컫는 단어였습니다. 원래의 의미는 "반지(ring), 원형의 선(circular line)”이란 뜻이었습니다. 라틴어 circus는 그리스어 kirkos- “원(a circle), 반지(a ring)”에서 유래했습니다. PIE 어원은 sker- “돌다(to turn), 구부리다(bend)”로 추정됩니다.
영어 단어 circus가 처음 영어에 들어 왔을 때는 곡예, 승마술 등의 기예를 공연하는 대형 무대라는 뜻이었습니다. 그러다가 1791년경부터 오늘날 같이 곡예 그 자체의 개념으로 사용되기 시작했습니다.
