경매라는 뜻을 가진 영어 단어 auction은 “입찰자들이 앞선 응찰가보다 비싼 가격을 제시하면 판매하는 공공 판매(public sale in which each bidder offers more than the previous bid)”라는 뜻으로 1590년대에 영어에 처음 등장하였습니다. Auction의 어원은 라틴어 auctionem입니다. 이 단어는 ‘증가하다(증가시키다)’라는 뜻을 가진 라틴어 동사 augere의 과거분사인 auctus에서 유래했습니다.
